Playing with Numbers, 2007, four channel video installation, DVD 12'(Extrac
The abstract world of numbers is being transformed in the artist's
studio. It scratches, rustles, crackles and claps. The sound reinforces
the impression of a laborious task. Woodcuts are produced, but it could
also be a unique, roughly carved currency. Traditional means of art
production are suddenly associated with the production of money. The
falling dice refer to gambling. The positions of the dice outline the
shape of a stain, which is then painted around the dice.
Zeros made of modeling clay are lined up in an endless queue. What is
the value of a million, when it is kneaded in clay? Hands stick through
the number 150000 and create rustling noises. The number is then cut
into pieces and wiped off the table. After particular rules, numbers are
being produced, modified and destroyed again. The work addresses the
process itself, the sounds this process creates and the aesthetic and
physical appearance of the numbers.
